Real-world assets (RWAs) have become one of the most closely watched sectors in crypto. Banks, asset managers, and fintech companies now issue government debt, fund shares, credit products, and gold on public blockchains, and a group of crypto projects has grown around that activity.

This guide covers 10 RWA crypto projects ranked by market capitalization, explains what each one does, and lists the largest tokenized assets by value. If you are new to the topic, start with our guide to what RWA means in crypto.

What are RWAs in crypto?

RWA stands for real-world assets. In crypto, RWAs are off-chain assets, such as bonds, fund shares, gold, credit, or real estate, that are represented by tokens on a blockchain. The token records the claim on-chain, while the asset itself stays with an issuer, custodian, or legal entity.

"RWA crypto" usually covers two different groups:

  • RWA projects and coins: tokens of protocols and networks that build tokenization tools, such as data feeds, issuance platforms, or lending markets. Their value depends on the project's adoption and token design;
  • Tokenized assets: tokens that represent a claim on a specific asset, such as gold or a money market fund. Their value tracks the underlying asset.

This article focuses on the first group and includes a short overview of the second. For a full explanation of how assets move on-chain, see real-world asset tokenization.

Chainlink is a decentralized oracle network that delivers off-chain data, such as prices and reserve information, to smart contracts. For RWAs, it provides price feeds, proof of reserve checks, and cross-chain messaging, which tokenized products need to stay linked to the assets behind them. Read our full guide on how Chainlink powers RWA.

Financial institutions have used Chainlink standards in live tokenization workflows. In November 2025, UBS used the Chainlink Digital Transfer Agent standard to process an on-chain subscription and redemption for its tokenized money market fund.

2. Quant (QNT)

Quant develops Overledger, a platform that connects different blockchains with existing enterprise and banking systems. Its focus is interoperability: letting institutions issue and move tokenized assets across networks without rebuilding their infrastructure.

QNT is used to pay for access to Quant's network services. It is classified as an RWA-related token because of its role in institutional tokenization projects, not because it represents an asset itself.

3. Ondo Finance (ONDO)

Ondo Finance issues tokenized products linked to U.S. Treasuries and money market exposure, such as USDY and OUSG, and runs Ondo Global Markets for tokenized stocks and ETFs. According to RWA.xyz, Ondo is one of the two largest tokenization platforms by distributed value.

ONDO is the project's governance token. Its price is driven by demand for the token and the project's adoption, not by the value of the Treasury products Ondo issues.

4. Sky (SKY), formerly Maker (MKR)

Sky is the rebranded MakerDAO protocol, which issues the DAI and USDS stablecoins. Over time, the protocol added real-world collateral, including tokenized Treasury products and private credit, to the reserves behind its stablecoins. That makes it one of the earliest large-scale users of RWAs in DeFi.

In 2025, the community upgraded the governance token from MKR to SKY. MKR holders were able to convert their tokens to SKY, which is now the protocol's governance token.

5. Pendle (PENDLE)

Pendle is not a pure RWA project. It splits certain tokens into two parts, one tied to the principal and one tied to future rate payments, and lets users trade each part separately. Some of the tokens it supports are linked to tokenized Treasuries and other real-world products.

Because it adds a layer of complexity on top of the underlying asset, Pendle is mostly used by experienced DeFi participants.

6. Maple Finance (SYRUP)

Maple Finance runs on-chain credit markets for institutional borrowers. Lenders supply stablecoins to pools, and borrowers are assessed through credit underwriting rather than only through crypto collateral. Its syrupUSDC pool is one of the largest asset-backed credit products tracked by RWA.xyz.

SYRUP replaced MPL as Maple's token. Lending to real-world borrowers carries credit risk, including the possibility of borrower default.

Swap SYRUP

7. Plume (PLUME)

Plume is a blockchain built specifically for real-world asset finance. It aims to bring tokenized assets and DeFi applications onto one network, with compliance tools designed for regulated products. RWA.xyz tracks Plume among the networks hosting distributed RWA value.

As a newer network, Plume's long-term adoption is still developing.

Swap PLUME

8. Polymesh (POLYX)

Polymesh is a layer 1 blockchain designed for regulated assets such as securities. Identity verification, compliance rules, and governance are built into the protocol itself rather than added through smart contracts.

POLYX is used to pay transaction fees, participate in governance, and support network operations.

9. Centrifuge (CFG)

Centrifuge was one of the first RWA protocols. It started with tokenized invoices and private credit and now provides infrastructure for tokenized funds. According to RWA.xyz, Centrifuge powers tokenized funds from Janus Henderson, including a AAA CLO fund and a Treasury fund.

In 2025, Centrifuge migrated its CFG token to Ethereum.

Swap CFG

10. Clearpool (CPOOL)

Clearpool is a decentralized credit marketplace where institutional borrowers create pools that lenders can supply. Many of its pools are unsecured, which means repayment depends on the borrower's creditworthiness rather than on posted collateral.

CPOOL is used for governance and incentives on the platform.

Restricted tokens can usually only be held by verified or qualified participants. Even freely transferable tokens may not be available in every jurisdiction. Stablecoins such as USDT and USDC are also backed by real-world reserves and are covered in our RWA guide. To compare the two largest gold-backed tokens, read PAXG vs XAUt: key differences explained.

RWA-focused blockchains

Several general-purpose networks also play a large role in RWAs. Ethereum hosts the largest share of distributed RWA value, followed by BNB Chain, Solana, Stellar (XLM), and Avalanche (AVAX). Networks such as Hedera, XDC Network, and Algorand are also listed in RWA categories on market data sites.

These networks are not RWA projects in the narrow sense, since tokenization is only one of their use cases. To learn more about one of the larger RWA networks, read Stellar and real-world assets.

Risks to consider before swapping RWA tokens

RWA projects combine crypto market risk with the risks of traditional finance.

  • Market risk: RWA project coins are as volatile as other crypto assets, regardless of how stable the underlying assets are;
  • Credit risk: lending protocols depend on borrowers repaying their loans;
  • Issuer and custody risk: tokenized assets depend on the issuer and custodian behind them;
  • Regulatory risk: rules for tokenized assets differ by country and continue to change;
  • Liquidity risk: smaller tokens may have limited trading activity.

✅ Before you swap:

  • check the token's contract address and network on the project's official website;
  • confirm the token is available in your jurisdiction;
  • read the project's documentation, not only third-party summaries.

Additional verification may be required depending on the provider or your jurisdiction. For an overview of other services, see platforms to buy and exchange RWA tokens.

Conclusion

The RWA sector now includes data networks, issuance platforms, stablecoin protocols, credit markets, and purpose-built blockchains. Each of these projects plays a different role, from connecting off-chain data to issuing tokenized funds or lending to real-world borrowers.

Their tokens, however, carry crypto market risk regardless of the assets they help bring on-chain. Understanding what each project does, and how its token differs from the tokenized assets it supports, is a practical first step before you swap any RWA token.

FAQ

What does RWA mean in crypto?

RWA stands for real-world assets. In crypto, it refers to tokens that represent off-chain assets, such as bonds, fund shares, gold, or real estate, and to the projects that build infrastructure for those tokens.

Which crypto coins are RWA?

RWA coins include tokens of projects focused on tokenization, such as Chainlink (LINK), Ondo (ONDO), Sky (SKY), Maple (SYRUP), Centrifuge (CFG), and Polymesh (POLYX). Tokenized assets such as XAUt, PAXG, and USDY are also often grouped under RWA tokens.

What are RWA tokens used for?

RWA tokens are used for settlement, collateral in lending protocols, on-chain access to traditional assets, and governance of RWA protocols. The specific use depends on whether the token is a tokenized asset or a project coin.

What role do stablecoins play in RWAs?

Fiat-backed stablecoins were the first RWAs to reach mass adoption, since they are backed by off-chain reserves such as cash and short-term Treasuries. They also act as the main settlement asset for many tokenized products.

Are RWAs the future of crypto?

RWAs are one of the areas where traditional finance and blockchain technology overlap most directly, and institutional activity is growing. How far adoption goes will depend on regulation, legal clarity, and whether tokenized assets develop active markets.
