Tether ERC20 Live Price Chart

USDT price can be volatile. You can see the history of price changes in the cryptocurrency price chart below to help you make the best decision while considering buying crypto.

USDT stands for Tether, which is a type of cryptocurrency commonly referred to as a stablecoin. Stablecoins are digital assets designed to have a stable value, typically pegged to a specific fiat currency like the US dollar.

Tether (USDT) is one of the most widely used stablecoins, introduced in 2014. It was created by Tether Limited, a company closely associated with the cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex. The primary purpose of USDT is to provide a stable alternative to other cryptocurrencies that experience price volatility.

Initially, Tether was launched on the Bitcoin blockchain using the Omni Layer protocol. However, to address scalability and transaction speed issues, Tether has expanded to other blockchain platforms, including Ethereum (ERC-20), Tron (TRC-20), and Solana (SPL). Each blockchain has its own version of USDT, such as USDT-ERC20, USDT-TRC20, and USDT-SPL.

Tether was initially launched under the name "Realcoin." It was rebranded as "Tether" later that year. The rebranding was accompanied by a change in the underlying technology, as Tether transitioned from using the Mastercoin protocol to the Omni Layer protocol on the Bitcoin blockchain. The change of name and technology aimed to reflect the company's focus on providing a stable digital asset that is tethered to the value of traditional fiat currencies, such as the US dollar.

The value of USDT is intended to be maintained at a 1:1 ratio with the US dollar. This means that for every USDT token issued, there should be an equivalent amount of US dollars held in reserve by Tether Limited. The company claims that these reserves back each USDT token, although there has been controversy and scrutiny surrounding Tether's transparency and the adequacy of its reserves.

Tether claimed to undergo regular audits to prove the adequacy of its reserves, but in recent years, it has faced criticism for failing to produce an audit report from a reputable third-party accounting firm. Tether has faced regulatory scrutiny due to this concerns about its transparency, financial backing, and potential impact on the stability of the broader cryptocurrency market. Investigations by authorities, such as the New York Attorney General's Office, have raised questions about Tether's practices and its relationship with Bitfinex.

Tether is a centralized stablecoin, as it is issued and controlled by a single entity, Tether Limited. This means that the company has the power to mint new tokens, freeze or seize funds, and enforce compliance measures.

USDT is frequently used in the cryptocurrency market as a means of quickly transferring value between different exchanges and platforms. It allows traders and investors to hold a stable digital asset without the need to convert their holdings back to traditional fiat currencies.

Tether operates on a tokenized system. The total supply of USDT can vary based on market demand, as Tether Limited mints or burns tokens according to the needs of its users.
