What is Kusama?

Kusama — abbreviated as KSM — is a native token of the Kusama Network, which, in turn, is an experimental version of Polkadot. KSM can be obtained by Polkadot's DOT token holders. Kusama is aligned with DOT holders and the Polkadot community: any user who holds DOT is automatically entitled to receive the same amount in KSM from the Kusama network. Those without any DOT tokens are able to acquire KSM through a faucet every time transfers are enabled (see the Kusama Network website for updates) or through several online exchanges that list it. Holders of KSM tokens are able to interact with the blockchain, pay for interoperability message passing, stake the tokens, and take part in governing the chain. Kusama has a maximum supply of 10 million KSM and with over 8.3 million currently in circulation. Advantages of Kusama: the network mostly serves as a proving ground for developers looking to build and deploy a parachain; Kusama allows users to text Polkadot’s processes and functionality in a real environment; KSM is a limited-supply asset: experts believe that the tokens will grow to have certain economic value.
