This article compares nine self-custody wallets on those criteria, with versions, prices, and dates checked in September 2026.
Quick answer: Lace, Eternl, Vespr, Typhon, Daedalus, and Exodus all support self-custody of ADA, but they serve different needs. Lace offers a relatively broad mix of Cardano governance and hardware-wallet support; Eternl is aimed more at advanced Cardano users; Vespr is mobile-first; and Daedalus runs a full Cardano node. For offline key storage, Ledger, Trezor, and Keystone can sign Cardano transactions through compatible wallet software. Trezor also supports ADA staking and DRep delegation directly through Trezor Suite.

The order above is a presentation choice grouped by wallet type, not a ranking.
A Cardano wallet is software that lets you manage the cryptographic keys used to access ADA and Cardano-native tokens. Depending on the wallet, it may also support ADA staking, Cardano governance, NFTs, dApps, and hardware-wallet signing.
Cardano wallets can be light wallets, which rely on external infrastructure for blockchain data, or full-node wallets, such as Daedalus, which download and validate the blockchain locally. Hardware wallets such as Ledger, Trezor, and Keystone keep signing keys on a separate device and work with compatible Cardano wallet software.
Every wallet here is self-custody: you hold the keys. Beyond that, we applied six checks, with software and hardware wallets assessed on their own terms.
Cardano wallets work differently from typical Ethereum wallets because Cardano uses the Extended UTXO (EUTXO) model rather than Ethereum's account-based model. ADA and Cardano-native tokens are represented directly on the ledger rather than requiring an ERC-20-style smart contract for each token.
Cardano wallets also need ecosystem-specific features such as CIP-30 dApp connectivity, ADA stake-pool delegation, and CIP-1694 governance support. This is why a wallet that supports Ethereum and other EVM networks does not automatically support Cardano.
Lace is an open-source light Cardano wallet developed by Input Output (IOG), available as a browser extension and mobile app. It supports ADA staking, DRep delegation, Cardano dApps, and multiple hardware signers.
It runs as a browser extension and as iOS and Android apps. Lace has also expanded beyond Cardano. Its browser extension supports Cardano, Bitcoin, and Midnight, while the mobile app currently supports Cardano and Bitcoin. The code is published as a public GitHub mirror under Apache-2.0.
The latest Lace extension release is 2.2.2, released August 26, 2026. Lace Mobile is on 2.2.0, released August 14, 2026. Governance arrived in stages: 2.1.1 added DRep delegation and management, and 2.2 added direct delegation to Abstain and No Confidence. IOG announced in October 2024 that Nami users could migrate into a Nami mode inside Lace. Hardware pairing is among the broadest here: an August 2026 announcement lists Ledger, Trezor, SeedSigner, and Keystone.
Who it suits: users who want an IOG-maintained wallet with four documented hardware signers and full governance tooling.
Who it is not for: anyone who needs a mature multi-chain portfolio today; the non-Cardano side is newer.
Trade-off: broad hardware support means more signers, each with firmware and app-version requirements to keep current.
Eternl is a Cardano light wallet for browser, web, iOS, and Android, aimed at users who want multi-account management and detailed transaction controls.
Version 2.1.7.1 shipped on September 5, 2026, confirmed by the Eternl release notes and the Chrome Web Store; it fixed Ledger signing with mixed Concise Binary Object Representation (CBOR) set tags. Eternl is a CIP-95 implementer listed as mainnet compatible on GovTool. Hardware pairing covers Ledger, Keystone, OneKey, and the Trezor Safe 7; Eternl's documentation does not name the Safe 3 or Safe 5. Version 2.1.6.5 added multiple DRep votes in one transaction with Ledger Cardano app 8, while app 7 keeps the older flow.
Who it suits: multi-account holders, DReps, and anyone who wants to inspect and customize transactions.
Who it is not for: first-time users; the interface exposes more settings than a beginner needs.
Trade-off: the depth that serves advanced workflows is what makes Eternl slower to learn.
Vespr is a mobile-first Cardano light wallet for iOS and Android, with a browser extension (Chrome, Brave, and Edge) and support for hardware signing through Ledger and Keystone on mobile. Its GitHub organization publishes open-source Ledger integration libraries, including Ledger Flutter Plus and a Cardano Ledger plugin, many under MIT. That does not establish that the whole application is open source.
Versions differ by platform: iOS 4.1.0 (July 27, 2026), Chrome extension 300.4.0.3 (May 17, 2026), Android updated May 24, 2026. Vespr is a CIP-95 implementer and mainnet compatible on GovTool. Eternl's cross-wallet compatibility documentation lists Ledger and Keystone for Vespr mobile; Trezor is not listed.
Who it suits: users who manage ADA from a phone and want Ledger or Keystone signing on mobile.
Who it is not for: Trezor owners, and anyone who wants one version number across desktop and mobile.
Trade-off: the mobile focus delivers a cleaner phone experience at the cost of desktop parity and hardware breadth.
Typhon is a Cardano light wallet available as a browser extension and web app, with staking, governance, and hardware-wallet support.
It is built on Strica's TyphonJS library, open source under Apache-2.0; the wallet application is a separate codebase.
The extension is at 3.2.34, updated September 10, 2026, the most recent update in this list. Typhon is a CIP-95 implementer and on GovTool's mainnet list. Its site lists Ledger Nano S/X, Trezor Model T, and Keystone as supported hardware. Note the Trezor wording: the page names the Model T, not the Safe 3 or Safe 5.
Who it suits: desktop users who want a lightweight extension with transparent library code and Keystone support.
Who it is not for: anyone who needs a native mobile app; there is none.
Trade-off: a small team ships fast, but the documented hardware list lags the devices Ledger and Trezor currently sell.
Daedalus is an open-source, full-node Cardano desktop wallet developed by IOG. Unlike light wallets, it downloads and validates the entire chain locally, so no remote server reports your balance. The code is on GitHub under Apache-2.0.
Version 11.1.0 was released on July 22, 2026; 11.0.0 added support for the Van Rossem hard fork and protocol version 11, bundling cardano-node 11.0.1. DRep delegation and automatic voting options have existed since 7.0.0, and 7.1.0 added CIP-129 DRep IDs. IOG currently recommends 24 GB of RAM, 32 GB for better performance, and 250–300 GB of free drive space, with storage requirements continuously growing. Two past releases mattered for day-to-day use: 6.0.1 (September 2024) resolved a Conway-era ledger replay issue that affected syncing, and 7.1.0 addressed a potential denial-of-service issue after Plomin.
Who it suits: holders who value independent validation and have a desktop with ample solid-state drive (SSD) space.
Who it is not for: mobile users, or anyone who wants to transact within minutes of installing.
Trade-off: full validation removes trust in remote servers and adds a multi-hour first sync plus ongoing storage growth.
Exodus is a closed-source, multi-chain software wallet on desktop, mobile, and as a Web3 wallet; our Exodus wallet review covers it in full. ADA is supported, and Exodus states that ADA staking is available in all three apps.
The limit is where the ADA sits: Exodus stakes ADA held in an Exodus portfolio; ADA held in Ledger or Trezor portfolios cannot be staked through Exodus. Exodus's current Cardano documentation covers ADA staking but does not document native DRep delegation.
Who it suits: users who hold ADA alongside many other assets and want one interface with in-app delegation.
Who it is not for: anyone who wants to stake hardware-held ADA, vote in governance, or audit the code.
Trade-off: one wallet for many chains, in exchange for open-source verification and Cardano governance features.
Ledger devices keep Cardano keys on a certified security chip and sign on the device. Official store prices in September 2026: Nano S Plus $79, Nano X $149, Nano Gen5 from $179, Flex $249, all USD at shop.ledger.com.
For Cardano, a Ledger works through a companion light wallet: Lace, Eternl, and Vespr (mobile only) pair with it, and Typhon lists the Nano S/X. Governance depends on the paired wallet and the Cardano app version; multi-vote DRep transactions need app 8.
Who it suits: holders who want a USB or Bluetooth signer that every light wallet in this list documents.
Who it is not for: anyone who wants a fully open-source device; parts of Ledger OS and the Secure Element firmware remain closed.
Trade-off: wallet coverage matched only by Keystone, paired with an operating system you cannot fully inspect.
Trezor supports Cardano natively in Trezor Suite, so you can hold and delegate ADA without a third-party wallet. The current lineup is the Safe 3, Safe 5, and Safe 7. Trezor's Cardano documentation lists the Safe 7, Safe 5, and Safe 3, and ADA staking through Suite is documented for those plus the Model T.
Light-wallet pairing needs care: Lace lists Trezor, Eternl confirms Safe 7 only, and Typhon names the Model T only. Trezor Suite also supports DRep delegation for Cardano. Trezor's documentation says users are prompted to delegate voting rights after registering their stake key.
Who it suits: holders who want open-source software and native ADA staking without a separate wallet.
Who it is not for: users of light wallets whose documentation has not caught up with the Safe series.
Trade-off: native Suite support removes a dependency, although light-wallet compatibility still varies by Trezor model.
Keystone 3 Pro is an air-gapped hardware wallet that signs by exchanging QR codes with a companion wallet, with a microSD slot as a second offline channel. The official price is $149 USD at shop.keyst.one as of September 2026; the microSD card is sold separately. It has three security chips, a 4-inch touchscreen, and fingerprint unlock, and its firmware is published on GitHub.
Keystone has no Cardano wallet of its own, so a companion light wallet is required. Lace added Keystone in August 2026, and Eternl, Vespr (mobile only), and Typhon list it. Keystone's firmware notes record a fix for ADA transactions failing with extra Eternl accounts, a sign the Cardano path is maintained.
Who it suits: holders who want no USB data or Bluetooth link to the signer and already use a supported light wallet.
Who it is not for: anyone who signs many transactions a day; QR signing adds a step each time.
Trade-off: air-gapped QR signing avoids a direct USB or Bluetooth data connection to the signer, at the cost of an additional manual step.

Yes. ADA can be delegated while the signing keys remain protected by compatible hardware. Trezor supports Cardano staking directly through Trezor Suite, while Ledger and Keystone can be used with compatible Cardano wallets that support stake delegation. Staking ADA does not require transferring custody of your coins.
Rewards keep accruing without a DRep delegation. Withdrawing them is different: since the Plomin hard fork on January 29, 2025, an account must delegate to a DRep, or to the predefined Abstain or No Confidence options, before it can withdraw rewards (cardano.org).
Lace, Eternl, Vespr, Typhon, and Daedalus support Cardano governance and DRep delegation. Trezor Suite also supports DRep delegation for compatible Trezor devices. Hardware-wallet governance support otherwise depends on the Cardano wallet and device/app version used.

Fees follow a formula: a fixed 155,381 lovelace plus 44 lovelace per byte of transaction size. A simple ADA transfer of 200 to 300 bytes therefore costs roughly 0.17 ADA. Cardano does not use an auction-style gas market for its base transaction fee. The base fee is deterministic from transaction size, while script execution and reference-script costs can increase the total.
There is no flat minimum. Each transaction output must hold at least its size in bytes multiplied by the coinsPerUTxOByte parameter, currently 4,310 lovelace per byte. A plain ADA output needs roughly 1 ADA; an output carrying several tokens or an NFT with metadata needs more.
Daedalus is a full-node Cardano wallet that downloads and validates the blockchain locally. Light wallets such as Lace, Eternl, Vespr, and Typhon use external infrastructure to retrieve blockchain data, so they require less storage and can be ready to use much faster. Both types can remain self-custodial because your private keys stay under your control.
IOG currently recommends 250–300 GB of free drive space for Daedalus, with storage requirements continuously growing. It also recommends 24 GB of RAM, with 32 GB recommended for better performance. Use an SSD and budget for growth beyond the current figure.
EMURGO rebranded Yoroi as SecondFi on April 22, 2026 (cardano.org). On June 23, 2026, SecondFi disclosed a security incident in its web wallet key-generation software and entered maintenance mode. EMURGO has since announced that Yoroi and SecondFi are winding down, which is why neither appears in this list.
