Hot vs. cold wallet

What is a hot wallet and what is a cold wallet?

Hot wallets are software tools that stay connected to the internet — think mobile apps, desktop programs, or web platforms. They keep your private keys on a device with live internet access and suit frequent transactions, letting users move crypto fast and without fuss. You’ll find them in familiar tools like MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Exodus, and the Coinbase Wallet.

Cold wallets take the opposite approach: they store keys offline. That means hardware devices — often looking like USB sticks — or paper wallets with printed keys, none of which touch the internet or link to other devices. People usually rely on them to hold bigger crypto holdings over the long term. Keeping keys offline sharply cuts the odds of hacking or online attacks. You’ve likely heard of such wallets: Trezor, Ledger, and KeepKey.

The key differences between them include:

  • Connectivity and security

The core divide is simple: hot wallets live online; cold wallets stay offline. That offline status is what makes cold wallets far safer from remote hacks and malware. Hot wallets, by contrast, face a wider range of online threats.

  • Convenience vs. speed

Hot wallets shine for daily use and trading — they’re quick and easy to reach. Cold wallets don’t match that immediacy. To transact, you often need to pull funds into a hot wallet first, and that starts with physically accessing the device.

  • Physical risk

Cold wallets dodge digital attacks, but they’re not immune to real-world problems. If the device gets lost, stolen, or damaged, you could lose access to everything — unless you’ve kept backup seed phrases safe and sound.

  • Cost

A lot of hot wallets come as free apps. Cold hardware wallets usually run you somewhere between $50 and $200.

  • Functional Analogy

Think of a hot wallet as the cash you keep in your pocket for everyday spending. A cold wallet, then, is more like a high-security safe meant for your life savings.
