What is THETA?
Theta is an open-source, public, blockchain-based ledger protocol and infrastructure for decentralized online video streaming. Theta forms a decentralized peer-to-peer network that provides high-quality video delivery at a minimal cost.
According to the project team, Theta was created to shake up the video streaming industry in its current form which is characterized by centralization, poor infrastructure, and high transaction costs, causing users to have a poor experience. It also keeps the content creators from earning proper revenue as they are separated from the users. To fight those challenges, the team formed a business plan to build an ecosystem of services focused on esports, music, TV, movies, and education. The project partnered with big enterprises such as Samsung VR, Cinedigm, Shout! Factory, Pandora.tv, Play Labs, and THETA.tv.
The Theta network was launched on January 18, 2018, by Mitch Liu and Jieyi Long. Both of the co-founders have a long experience in gaming, video, virtual reality, design, and related fields.
The team has been focused on building up a strong community and already had a working product before they started their public sale. Theta has raised $12 million in its initial coin offering; the sale, now over, drew significant interest from big names in the blockchain and cryptocurrency industry. The project raised $19.5 million in the pre-sale, which started on December 5, 2017
Theta is a fork of the EOS codebase, though differentiates itself from EOS because it is designed for streaming media, especially for decentralized online video game streaming. The developers of Theta believe that their platform will be used for two primary purposes: decentralized video game streaming and video-on-demand.
By incentivizing users to share bandwidth, storage, and computing resources, the Theta network reduces or entirely eliminates the costs of bandwidth and server hosting, leading to a reduction in the cost of video production and distribution. Video is a decentralized application (dApp) made for streaming content delivery and storage. Decentralized video streaming allows for video files to be broken apart into tiny chunks and stored across a peer-to-peer network.
Theta was originally envisioned as a way to incentivize a decentralized peer-to-peer network for live streamers so that they could stream high-quality video at a minimal cost. The result was the birth of Theta Labs.
By utilizing a delegated Proof-of-Stake consensus algorithm while employing a multi-level Byzantine Fault Tolerance consensus mechanism to balance security, Theta is able to produce blocks at a much faster rate than EOS, while providing a high level of security and low fees. This greatly increases the number of transactions that the network can handle, and allows for quick confirmation times for each individual transaction.
Transactions are confirmed by only one block producer, and then immediately broadcast over the network. They can then be confirmed by the rest of the network in parallel. This means that Theta can handle a much higher throughput of transactions than EOS can. It also makes Theta less centralized than EOS, since there are far fewer block producers. It is estimated that Theta can handle up to 500 transactions per second.
The Theta ecosystem includes influencers (content creators), viewers (end video content consumers), advertisers (who sponsor content creators by putting up the ads), caching nodes (computers responsible for checking content quality and delivery speed), and ingest nodes (provide bitrates/stream resolution and assisting the caching nodes).
As the protocol is open-source, anyone can create their dApps on the platform. Users are rewarded for sharing video content through the decentralized video streaming dApp for transcription and distribution of the content, called EdgeCast.
THETA is a native token of the Theta network. It performs several governance options within the network and also counts Google, Binance, Blockchain ventures, Gumi, Sony Europe, and Samsung as enterprise validators. At first, THETA was launched as an ERC-20 token, but later it was moved to the native network. THETA has a total supply of 1 billion tokens.
The project also has a second token called Theta Fuel (TFUEL) which is rewarded to the users for the activity on the platform, such as sharing and distributing the content. TFUEL is also a micropayment cryptocurrency, used for all the operations of the protocol, including the gas fees. The token has a total supply of 5 billion.
Average Fees on the Theta Network
Theta’s fees are currently 0.00005 Theta per transaction. The withdrawal and deposit fees may vary depending on the platform the users want to use for trading, and usually don’t exceed $0.096.
The THETA Token Wallets
THETA tokens can be held in most of the common crypto wallets, including Ledger, Atomic Wallet, TRON Wallet, TrustWallet, Exodus, and also the native wallet of the network called THETA Wallet.
