What is Cosmos Crypto?

Cosmos blockchain is a decentralized network designed to facilitate the interoperability of multiple independent blockchains. The Cosmos project aims to solve some of the scalability, usability, and sovereignty issues that exist in the current blockchain ecosystem.

Cosmos is often described as “Blockchain 3.0”, implying that it represents a new generation or iteration in the evolution of blockchain technology. The term "Blockchain 3.0" is often used to describe advancements that go beyond the limitations of earlier generations. In the context of Cosmos, this could refer to its emphasis on interoperability and scalability. Cosmos aims to enable different blockchains to communicate and interact with each other, addressing some of the scalability issues faced by earlier blockchain networks. Cosmos emphasizes building a diverse and interoperable ecosystem of blockchains, each specialized for specific use cases, fostering innovation and collaboration.

The Cosmos network was launched by a team of developers led by Jae Kwon. The project was initiated by Tendermint Inc., a blockchain development company co-founded by Jae Kwon. While Jae Kwon played a prominent role as the founder and leader of Tendermint Inc., the company behind Cosmos, there were other key contributors involved in various aspects of the project.

Ethan Buchman is another co-founder of Tendermint and was involved in the development of the Tendermint consensus algorithm, which is a critical component of the Cosmos network.

Although Kwon is still listed as principal architect, he stepped down as CEO in 2020. He maintains he is still a part of the project but is mainly focusing on other initiatives. He has now been replaced as Tendermint’s CEO by Peng Zhong, and the whole board of directors was given quite a substantial refresh. Their goals include enhancing the experience for developers, creating an enthusiastic community for Cosmos, and building educational resources so greater numbers of people are aware of what this network is capable of.

The Cosmos Hub, which is the central blockchain in the Cosmos network, officially launched on March 14, 2019. The development of Cosmos, including the Tendermint consensus engine and the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol, took several years leading up to the launch.

The primary motivation behind the launch of Cosmos was to address the lack of interoperability between different blockchains. The Cosmos project aimed to create a network where independent blockchains, known as zones, could communicate with each other through the Cosmos Hub. This interoperability is facilitated by the IBC protocol, allowing for the transfer of assets and information between different blockchains.

Cosmos utilizes a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, where validators are chosen to create new blocks based on the number of tokens they hold and are willing to "stake" as collateral. Token holders can participate in the governance of the network by voting on proposals. The Cosmos network was built using the Tendermint consensus algorithm. Tendermint is a Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus mechanism that provides security and finality for the Cosmos blockchain. The IBC protocol was designed to enable communication and interoperability between different blockchains within the Cosmos ecosystem.

The Tendermint consensus algorithm possesses a characteristic known as instant finality. It means that as long as over one-third of the validators remain honest (byzantine), forks in the blockchain never occur. Unlike Proof-of-Work blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, where transaction finality may take time, users on a Tendermint-based blockchain can be confident that their transactions are conclusively settled the moment a block is created.

One of the key features of Cosmos is its focus on interoperability. IBC allows different blockchains within the Cosmos ecosystem to communicate and transfer assets with each other. This enables the creation of a "hub-and-spoke" model where multiple blockchains, called zones, are connected to a central blockchain, called the hub.

The Cosmos Hub is the central blockchain that connects various zones. It acts as a communication hub for different blockchains within the Cosmos network.

Cosmos offers an SDK (Software Development Kit) known as the Cosmos SDK. The Cosmos SDK is a framework for building blockchain applications with a focus on ease of use and modularity. It provides developers with the tools and libraries necessary to create their own blockchain networks or applications that can be interoperable with the broader Cosmos ecosystem. The SDK includes built-in support for staking mechanisms and on-chain governance, allowing developers to implement these features in their blockchain applications.

The goal of the Cosmos SDK is to create an ecosystem of modules that allows developers to easily spin up application-specific blockchains without having to code each bit of functionality of their application from scratch. Anyone can create a module for the Cosmos SDK, and using ready-built modules in your blockchain is as simple as importing them into your application. For example, the Tendermint team is building a set of basic modules that are needed for the Cosmos Hub. These modules can be used by any developer as they build their own application. Additionally, developers can create new modules to customize their applications. As the Cosmos network develops, the ecosystem of SDK modules will expand, making it increasingly easier to develop complex blockchain applications.

The native cryptocurrency of the Cosmos network is called ATOM. ATOM is used for staking, governance, and as a means of transferring value within the Cosmos ecosystem. The total supply of the ATOM token is 375,120,386, and as of November 17, 2023, all of the assets are in the current circulation.

Where to buy ATOM tokens

ATOM tokens can be bought on various cryptocurrency exchanges, including Binance, Kraken, Coinbase, Huobi, Bittrex, Gate.io, etc.

The average fees on the Cosmos network

The transaction fees within the Cosmos interoperable ecosystem are reported to be approximately $0.01 on average, marking them as some of the most cost-effective in the decentralized sphere.
