On December 1 Ankr announced a technical upgrade related to all reward-bearing tokens and reward-earning tokens. The deployer changed the implementation contract to the vulnerable contract address. The deployers’ private key was most likely exposed during the upgrade, so the attacker accessed the deployer’s privileges to modify the contract.
The exploiter transferred around 900 BNB worth around $230 000 at the moment of attack into Tornado Cash. According to the investigation made by the Beosin blockchain security firm, the attacker holds around 3000 ETH and 500000 USDT. The overall damage is estimated at around $15 million.
