Ankr is a decentralized permissionless blockchain infrastructure provider that operates numerous nodes distributed across over 50 decentralized networks around the world. Ankr is built on the Ethereum blockchain and uses the native-oracle system for off-chain data and its processing. This system allows Ankr to interact with external data sources without the need for a third party. This system enables Ankr to process data in a faster and more efficient way.

The Ankr network is secured by a Proof-of-Stake consensus algorithm that rewards participants for staking their tokens, known as ANKR. The total supply is 10 billion tokens. ANKR was initially an ERC20 token that is used to pay for services on the Ankr ecosystem. It is also used to reward users for their participation in the Ankr ecosystem. The asset also exists as BEP-2 and BEP-20 coins, and it is also available on Avalanche, Polygon, and Fantom networks. 

The token plays a core role in enabling institutional and independent node providers to monetize their nodes’ excess capacity and allow node consumers to benefit from a pay-as-you-go model, disrupting traditional blockchain API providers that force users into paid plans that require oversubscription. 

Ankr offers a simplified staking process to its users, allowing them to earn rewards in multiple ways, including liquid staking, pooled staking, parachain liquid bonding, and more. 

On December 1 Ankr announced a technical upgrade related to all reward-bearing tokens and reward-earning tokens. The deployer changed the implementation contract to the vulnerable contract address. The deployers’ private key was most likely exposed during the upgrade, so the attacker accessed the deployer’s privileges to modify the contract.

The exploiter transferred around 900 BNB worth around $230 000 at the moment of attack into Tornado Cash. According to the investigation made by the Beosin blockchain security firm, the attacker holds around 3000 ETH and 500000 USDT. The overall damage is estimated at around $15 million.
