Litecoin Live Price Chart

LTC price can be volatile. You can see the history of price changes in the cryptocurrency price chart below to help you make the best decision while considering buying crypto.

Litecoin is a popular peer-to-peer cryptocurrency and an open-source project. Litecoin aims to be a faster and more scalable alternative to Bitcoin, with some technical differences, such as a different hashing algorithm (Scrypt) and a shorter block generation time. It is often considered one of the earliest altcoins, created as an alternative to Bitcoin.

Litecoin was created by Charlie Lee, a former Google employee and software engineer, who announced the launch of the cryptocurrency on October 7, 2011. Charlie Lee saw the potential in Bitcoin but also recognized the need for a complementary cryptocurrency that could address some of its limitations. He aimed to create a cryptocurrency that could be used alongside Bitcoin, offering a faster transaction confirmation time and a more decentralized mining process.

Additionally, Charlie Lee wanted to experiment with new technologies and improvements before implementing them in Bitcoin. This approach allowed Litecoin to serve as a testing ground for features like Segregated Witness (SegWit), which was later activated on the Bitcoin network.

One of the defining features of Litecoin is its use of the Scrypt hashing algorithm for mining. Scrypt is a memory-hard algorithm, which means it requires more memory to perform mining operations. This was chosen intentionally to make it more resistant to specialized mining hardware (ASICs) and allow for more widespread participation in mining using consumer-grade hardware.

Litecoin was designed to have a faster block generation time compared to Bitcoin, with a new block being generated approximately every 2.5 minutes. This faster block time enables quicker transaction confirmations and higher transaction throughput.

Litecoin has a dedicated and active community of developers and supporters. The project's open-source nature encourages contributions from various developers worldwide.

Litecoin has gained a fair amount of adoption over the years. It is accepted by many merchants and online retailers as a payment method. However, its adoption might vary depending on the region and the specific use case.

Litecoin was also created with a different total supply compared to Bitcoin. While Bitcoin has a maximum supply cap of 21 million coins, Litecoin's maximum supply is set at 84 million coins. This fourfold increase was meant to provide a larger number of coins in circulation and potentially lower transaction costs. The circulating supply of LTC is 73,518,339 tokens as of August 8, 2023.

Litecoin Core is the official desktop wallet software for Litecoin. It allows you to interact with the Litecoin network and manage your Litecoin holdings. It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems.

MimbleWimble, named after the tongue-tying spell in Harry Potter, is a groundbreaking privacy and scalability upgrade that was implemented on the Litecoin network on May 19th, 2022. This upgrade introduced significant privacy features, allowing users to conduct transactions with enhanced confidentiality.

The idea of MimbleWimble was first proposed in November 2019 through a Litecoin Improvement Proposal, with the primary focus on improving anonymity between senders and receivers. With the activation of the MimbleWimble upgrade at Litecoin block 2,257,920, users gained the option to prioritize transaction privacy while enjoying other benefits, such as reduced transaction data in blocks.

The core concept of MimbleWimble is to combine multiple transactions into a single transfer by recording only one input-output pair. This approach minimizes the amount of transaction data stored on the blockchain, enhancing scalability and reducing the blockchain's overall size.

Despite the advantages of the MimbleWimble Extension Blocks (MWEB) upgrade, it has faced regulatory challenges. Some South Korean exchanges, including Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit, and Gopax, made the decision to delist Litecoin from their platforms shortly after the MWEB upgrade took effect. This move was in response to regulatory requirements that demand cryptocurrency exchanges to prevent money laundering and illicit activities by adhering to the Act on the Reporting and Use of Specific Financial Transaction Information. Due to the heightened privacy capabilities introduced by the upgrade, these exchanges found it difficult to comply with the strict regulatory standards.

Average Fees on the Litecoin Network

Litecoin generally has lower transaction fees compared to Bitcoin, partly due to its faster block confirmation times. This has made it more attractive for smaller everyday transactions.
