What is ZetaChain?

Zeta Chain is a blockchain platform functioning as both a Layer 1 (L1) blockchain and a smart contract infrastructure. It offers integrated connectivity across various blockchain networks and layers. Notably, Zeta Chain stands out for its ability to facilitate smart contracts capable of managing assets, data, and liquidity across different blockchains, including those lacking native smart contract capabilities like Bitcoin. This unique feature enhances interoperability and versatility within the blockchain ecosystem.

Zeta Chain addresses the complex and security-prone processes involved in setting up new wallets, transitioning between networks, and establishing connections across disparate blockchains and layers. By offering a unified solution, Zeta Chain simplifies access to the diverse blockchain ecosystem for users and developers without compromising security.

At its core, Zeta Chain provides a gateway that streamlines access to various blockchain networks and layers. This approach allows seamless integration with emerging blockchain technologies while extending advanced smart contract capabilities to established chains like Bitcoin and Dogecoin. In essence, Zeta Chain enables ongoing innovation in the cryptocurrency space while offering users and developers a straightforward and secure point of entry into the broader blockchain landscape.

ZetaChain's founder brings extensive experience, having been an early Coinbase employee and a contributor to Basic Attention Token (BAT) creation. This background has attracted significant investment from prominent figures in the cryptocurrency industry, including major market makers, exchanges, and individuals like Dan Romero, Sam Rosenblum, and John Yi, all with ties to the early stages of Coinbase and Binance.

Moreover, ZetaChain has garnered support from key contributors to widely adopted industry protocols and reputable funds, including JD Kanani, known for his role in Polygon's development.

Additionally, the project benefits from seasoned advisors like Nathalie McGrath, Coinbase's former Head of People, who played a crucial role in the exchange's substantial growth. Juan Suarez, another notable advisor, served as in-house counsel at Coinbase for nearly a decade, providing invaluable legal counsel to the project.

ZetaChain mainnet was launched on January 31, 2024.

ZetaChain operates not only as a Layer 1 blockchain but also functions as a pivotal layer facilitating connectivity among diverse blockchain networks. Behind the scenes, the system operates through several key mechanisms:

  • Nodes: ZetaChain's network nodes actively monitor events, such as payment transactions, occurring on external chains. They collaborate to achieve consensus on these events and securely validate them for transmission to any connected blockchain.
  • Omnichain smart contracts: Central to ZetaChain's functionality are omnichain smart contracts. These contracts are designed to ingest and process events originating from external chains, serving as a unified repository of truth. They meticulously maintain the state of assets and data across all interconnected chains, ensuring coherence and integrity throughout the ecosystem.
  • Chain-agnostic message passing: ZetaChain introduces a seamless method for existing smart contracts to communicate and transfer data and value across disparate chains and layers. Through a straightforward function call, smart contracts can effortlessly exchange information, fostering interoperability and fluidity within the interconnected blockchain environment.

ZetaChain implements a streamlined and resilient trust model that eliminates reliance on third-party intermediaries. In Zrta Chain’s decentralized proof-of-stake network, trust is placed solely in our network to securely transmit data and value, rather than depending on external entities. Crucially, the architecture ensures that no individual node possesses knowledge of any private key, enhancing security measures.

Within ZetaChain's framework, assets can be signed and stored directly, mitigating potential risks associated with holding funds. By utilizing ZETA as an intermediary token during asset transfers, our platform minimizes the attack surface, thereby significantly lowering security vulnerabilities for users. This approach ensures that funds remain safeguarded, providing peace of mind for participants in the ZetaChain ecosystem.

The launch of ZetaChain Mainnet Beta brings forth ZetaHub, a user-friendly gateway enabling active engagement with the ZetaChain ecosystem. This all-encompassing platform offers various functionalities, including governance participation, proof of stake mechanisms, and seamless access to the extensive ZetaChain decentralized application (dApp) ecosystem.

Within ZetaHub, users gain the ability to monitor their on-chain activities through a dedicated rewards system known as Zeta XP. This system incentivizes and rewards users for their contributions and participation within the ZetaChain network, fostering a dynamic and engaging user experience.

ZETA serves as the native coin of the ZetaChain ecosystem, pioneering a multi-chain issuance approach. Its versatility within the network encompasses several vital functions, notably acting as an intermediary token for facilitating cross-chain value transfers. Furthermore, ZETA functions akin to gas on the network, akin to ETH on Ethereum, and plays a pivotal role in maintaining and incentivizing decentralization through mechanisms such as staking, bonding, and slashing.

These intrinsic characteristics of ZETA establish a robust foundation for the security, longevity, and scalability of the ZetaChain network. This starkly contrasts numerous existing interoperability solutions, which often grapple with centralization issues, inadequate incentivization, and long-term sustainability challenges.

ZETA's role as the standard unit of value transfer across interconnected chains significantly reduces the network's susceptibility to potential exploits. This aspect underscores ZetaChain's resilience against vulnerabilities commonly observed in other interoperability projects, positioning it as a more secure and dependable choice for users seeking seamless cross-chain transactions.

The total supply of ZETA tokens is fixed at 2,100,000,000 (two billion one million tokens). Here's a distribution breakdown of the ZETA token:

  • Community Reserve: 50%
  • Early Contributors: 20%
  • Investors: 14%
  • Mysten Labs Treasury: 10%
  • Community Access Program: 6%

The Average Fees on the ZetaChain Network

To initiate cross-chain transactions on ZetaChain, users, whether through a wallet or contract, are required to pay fees. These fees cover the costs associated with transmitting both data and value across different chains within the ZetaChain ecosystem.

Payment for fees is made by sending ZETA tokens, along with message data, to a Connector contract on a connected chain. The ZETA tokens serve multiple purposes: compensating validators, stakers, and ecosystem pools, as well as covering gas fees on the destination chain. From the user's perspective, all these expenses are consolidated into a single transaction.

When conducting a cross-chain message transmission, users encounter two distinct types of fees:

  • Outbound gas fee: This fee is dynamically calculated based on factors such as gas prices on the destination chain, the gas limit set by the user, and token prices within the liquidity pools on ZetaChain.
  • Protocol fee: Currently, this fee is a fixed value predetermined in the ZetaChain source code.

As of February 2024, the current average fee is around 2 ZETA (according to the ZetaDocs at the official Zeta.Chain website).

The ZETA Token Wallets

ZETA tokens can be stored in some of the popular crypto wallets, such as MetaMask, DataWallet, OKX, XDEFI.
