MATIC (also known as Polygon) is a protocol and framework designed to enhance the scalability and usability of Ethereum. It aims to address some of the limitations of the Ethereum network, such as high transaction fees and slow confirmation times.

MATIC/Polygon achieves this by utilizing a Layer 2 scaling solution that works alongside the Ethereum mainchain. It acts as a bridge between the Ethereum network and its own network, which employs a modified version of the Plasma framework. This enables faster and cheaper transactions while still benefiting from Ethereum's security.

Polygon, formerly known as Matic Network, was founded by three individuals: Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, and Anurag Arjun. The project was officially launched in October 2017, with its whitepaper released in January 2018.

The founders aimed to address the scalability and user experience issues faced by the Ethereum network. Ethereum's popularity had led to network congestion and high transaction fees, making it less efficient for certain use cases like decentralized applications and micropayments. Polygon's founders recognized the need for a solution that could provide faster and more cost-effective transactions while leveraging Ethereum's security.

The project began as Matic Network and focused on building a Layer 2 scaling solution using the Plasma framework. This would allow transactions to be processed off the main Ethereum chain while still benefiting from its security guarantees. Over time, the project evolved, and in February 2021, it rebranded as Polygon to better reflect its broader vision of becoming a multi-chain scaling solution for Ethereum and other blockchain networks.

Polygon aims to provide a seamless experience for both developers and users by offering various tools, frameworks, and infrastructure to build and interact with decentralized applications. Its interoperability and compatibility with Ethereum's smart contracts have made it a popular choice in the blockchain space.

The MATIC token is the native cryptocurrency of the Polygon network. It has utility within the ecosystem, serving as a means of payment for transaction fees, participating in network governance, and providing security through staking.

MATIC was initially issued as an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain. However, with the evolution of the Polygon network, MATIC has transitioned to become a multi-chain token that exists on both the Ethereum mainchain and the Polygon PoS chain.

MATIC tokens are bridged between the Ethereum mainchain and the Polygon PoS chain. This means that users can move MATIC tokens seamlessly between the two chains using the Polygon PoS Bridge and the Ethereum-MATIC PoS Bridge.

MATIC tokens are used for staking in the Polygon PoS network. Validators stake MATIC as collateral to participate in block validation and consensus. In return, they earn rewards for their contributions to network security and transaction validation.

On the Polygon network, MATIC tokens are used to pay transaction fees and for other network-related costs. Since transactions on Polygon are generally faster and cheaper than on the Ethereum mainchain, MATIC can help facilitate cost-effective transfers and interactions.

In addition to direct staking, MATIC holders can also delegate their tokens to validators to participate in the network's staking process. Delegators earn a portion of the rewards generated by the validators they delegate to.

MATIC is integrated into various dApps, protocols, and projects within the Polygon ecosystem. This integration facilitates seamless interactions within the network and its applications.

MATIC has a total supply of 10 billion tokens and as of August 24, 2023, the circulating supply is 9,319,469,069 MATIC.

Average Fees on the Polygon Network

Transactions on the Polygon network are generally more cost-effective due to its Layer 2 scaling solutions, such as the PoS chain and various sidechains.

The specific average transaction fees on Polygon can vary based on network activity, gas demand, and the complexity of the transactions being processed. However, fees are typically much lower than those on the Ethereum mainchain.
