What is Avax Crypto?

Avalanche is a decentralized blockchain platform that aims to provide fast, highly scalable, and customizable blockchain networks. It was designed to address some of the scalability and performance issues faced by earlier blockchain networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Avalanche was founded by Emin Gün Sirer, Maofan "Ted" Yin, and Kevin Sekniqi. Emin Gün Sirer is a well-known computer scientist and professor at Cornell University, specializing in distributed systems and network security. The other co-founders, Yin and Sekniqi, also have backgrounds in computer science and engineering.

The project was officially announced in May 2020, with the goal of addressing scalability, security, and decentralization challenges faced by existing blockchain platforms. Avalanche was developed by Ava Labs, a blockchain technology company founded by the team behind the Avalanche project.

The motivation behind founding Avalanche was to create a high-performance and customizable blockchain platform that could support a wide range of decentralized applications (DApps) and smart contracts. The team aimed to provide a solution that would overcome some of the limitations of earlier blockchain networks, such as slow transaction speeds and scalability issues.

Since its inception, Avalanche has gained attention for its unique consensus algorithm, its focus on decentralization, and its ability to support multiple interoperable blockchains within a single network.

Avalanche uses a consensus protocol called Avalanche consensus, which is a variation of the classical practical Byzantine fault tolerance (pBFT) algorithm. The Avalanche consensus allows for quick finality and high throughput, making it well-suited for decentralized applications (DApps), smart contracts, and other blockchain-based services.

In Avalanche, nodes come to consensus by repeatedly sampling a small, random subset of the network and querying their opinions. This probabilistic sampling and repeated queries help the network converge rapidly to a final decision.

One key feature of Avalanche is its ability to support multiple interoperable blockchains, known as subnets, within the same network. Each subnet can have its own set of rules and virtual machine, enabling developers to create customized blockchain networks to meet specific requirements.

Subnets enable developers to create customized blockchain networks tailored to specific use cases or requirements. Subnets can have their own governance structures, allowing developers and users to customize decision-making processes based on the specific requirements of each blockchain. This provides flexibility and autonomy for different projects within the Avalanche ecosystem.

The primary network or P-Chain is the primary blockchain that coordinates the creation and interoperability of subnets. It manages network parameters, validator sets, and staking. The P-Chain also handles the creation of new subnets and manages the overall Avalanche network.

Each subnet on the Avalanche network can run its own virtual machine, allowing developers to deploy smart contracts and decentralized applications (DApps) specific to that subnet. Avalanche supports the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing developers familiar with Ethereum to easily migrate and deploy their existing applications on Avalanche.

Avalanche employs a unique network architecture designed to achieve high throughput, quick finality, and flexibility. Each subnet on the Avalanche network can run its own virtual machine, allowing developers to deploy smart contracts and decentralized applications (DApps) specific to that subnet.

Avalanche features a bridge mechanism that allows the transfer of assets between different subnets. This inter-subnet communication enhances the interoperability of the entire Avalanche network.

Avalanche uses two additional protocols, Snowman and Snowflake, for asset creation and custom blockchain creation, respectively. Snowman is used for creating new digital assets on Avalanche, while Snowflake is utilized for creating new blockchains (subnets).

The native cryptocurrency of the Avalanche platform is called AVAX. AVAX can be used for various purposes within the Avalanche ecosystem, including transaction fees, staking, and participating in governance decisions.

The total AVAX supply is 720 million, distributed across various categories as outlined below:

  • Seed Sale (2.5%): 10% released at mainnet launch, and the remainder released in quarterly intervals.
  • Private Sale (3.5%): 10% released at mainnet launch, with subsequent releases occurring every three months.
  • Public Sale (10%): 10% released at mainnet launch, followed by 15% released every three months over an 18-month period.
  • Foundation Allocation (9.26%): Released gradually over a ten-year duration.
  • Community Endowment (7%): Released over a twelve-month period.
  • Testnet Incentive Program (0.27%): Released over one year.
  • Strategic Partners (5%): Released over a four-year period.
  • Airdrops (2.5%): Released over four years.
  • Team Allocation (10%): Released over four years.

As of January 18, 2024 the circulating supply of the AVAX token is 366,707,147.

Staking AVAX currently yields an annual reward of 11.57%. The minimum staking period is two weeks, requiring a minimum of 2,000 AVAX.

Users can buy Avalanche (AVAX) on various cryptocurrency exchanges, including Binance, KuCoin, BitFinex, Gate.io, etc.

The Average Fees on the Avalanche Network

Avalanche is known for its low transaction fees compared to some other blockchain networks. However, specific fee structures can vary based on the type of transaction and the demand on the network.

The prevailing average gas fee on the Avalanche network stands at 5,110.30 nAVAX, equivalent to roughly $4.41. This marks a notable rise in fees compared to the prior average transaction cost on the network, which was 80 nAVAX (approximately $0.05).

The AVAX Token Wallets

The AVAX tokens can be stored in a wide variety of the crypto wallets, including Avalanche Wallet: The official wallet provided by Avalanche, MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Atomic Wallet, Ledger, Trezor, Exodus, etc.
