TradFi

What is Tradfi?

Traditional finance (TradFi) is the established financial system that most people use in everyday life. It is based on centralized institutions, financial intermediaries, and government regulations. Together, these components facilitate financial transactions, support economic activity, and help manage risk.

Examples of traditional finance

TradFi includes a wide range of financial institutions and services.

  • Institutions. These include retail and commercial banks such as JPMorgan Chase and HSBC, investment banks, insurance companies, brokerage firms, and stock exchanges such as the NYSE and Nasdaq. Venture capital firms and hedge funds are also part of the traditional financial system.
  • Services. TradFi offers products and services such as savings accounts, mortgages, personal loans, foreign exchange services, stock brokerage accounts, pension funds, and mutual funds.
  • Regulatory bodies. Central banks — including the U.S. Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank — oversee monetary policy and financial stability. Regulatory agencies, such as the SEC, supervise financial markets and enforce compliance with applicable regulations.

How to recognize traditional finance

Several characteristics distinguish TradFi from other financial systems.

Centralization

Financial transactions are processed through centralized institutions, such as banks, payment providers, or clearinghouses. These intermediaries typically hold customer assets and maintain transaction records.

Strict regulation

Financial institutions operate under national laws and regulatory oversight. They are generally required to follow procedures such as Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) checks to verify customer identities and comply with financial regulations.

Access requirements

Access to many financial services may depend on meeting specific eligibility criteria, such as providing identification, passing credit checks, or maintaining minimum account balances.

Fiat-based system

Traditional finance primarily operates with government-issued currencies — such as the U.S. dollar or the euro — along with regulated financial instruments such as stocks and bonds.

Established operating models

TradFi relies on long-established financial practices, institutional processes, and regulatory frameworks. As a result, the adoption of new technologies is often more gradual than in emerging financial ecosystems such as decentralized finance (DeFi).
