What is Injective Protocol?

Injective Protocol (INJ) is a decentralized finance (DeFi) project that focuses on creating a decentralized derivatives exchange. The goal of Injective Protocol is to enable users to trade a variety of financial products, including futures and other derivatives, in a decentralized and permissionless manner.

Injective Protocol stands atop the Cosmos blockchain, serving as a Layer 2 application. Distinguishing itself from decentralized exchanges like Uniswap or Bancor, Injective utilizes cross-chain bridges, empowering traders to access cryptocurrencies across platforms like Ethereum and Polkadot.

In contrast to the automated market maker (AMM) formula employed by some decentralized exchanges, Injective Protocol adopts the order book model. This time-tested approach, familiar with centralized stock and crypto exchanges, replaces the AMM. The objective is clear: Injective seeks to meld the efficiency found in traditional finance with the transparency intrinsic to decentralized exchanges.

Injective Protocol aims to provide a decentralized platform for trading a wide range of derivatives, allowing users to speculate on the price movements of various assets without the need for traditional intermediaries. Injective Protocol is also designed to be interoperable with other blockchains, allowing for cross-chain trading. This means users can potentially access and trade assets from different blockchain networks.

Injective Protocol was founded by Eric Chen, Albert Chon, and Kerman Kohli. The three co-founders launched the Injective Protocol intending to create a decentralized derivatives exchange and provide infrastructure for decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. Eric Chen, in particular, has been recognized as the CEO of Injective Protocol. Keep in mind that additional team members may have contributed to the project's development and success.

Incubated by Binance Labs in 2018, Injective Protocol marked a significant milestone as the inaugural Binance Labs incubated the project to premiere on Binance Launchpad in 2020. The project achieved another key milestone with the launch of its mainnet in November 2021. In August 2022, Injective Protocol announced a successful fundraising round of $40 million, led by Jump Crypto and BH Digital. This strategic funding is poised to support and propel Injective Protocol's continued growth and development within the decentralized finance (DeFi) landscape.

Injective Protocol is designed to serve as a foundational infrastructure for decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, offering key primitives for the financial ecosystem. One notable feature is its fully decentralized on-chain order book, designed to resist Miner Extractable Value (MEV). The platform supports various on-chain financial markets, including spot, perpetual, futures, and options.

In terms of cross-chain compatibility, Injective boasts a decentralized bridging infrastructure that seamlessly integrates with Ethereum, IBC-enabled blockchains, and non-Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) chains such as Solana.

Injective aims to provide a next-generation, highly interoperable smart contract platform based on CosmWasm, incorporating advanced interchain capabilities. The project is constructed using the Cosmos SDK and operates on a Tendermint-based Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism, ensuring rapid transaction finality and high performance, surpassing 10,000 transactions per second.

Within the Injective Chain DEX, traders have access to various modules:

  • Auction Module: This feature enables token holders to bid on collections of tokens formed from exchange trading fees. The protocol eliminates, or "burns," the INJ tokens paid by the highest bidder, removing them from circulation.
  • Exchange Module: Traders can utilize this module to create and trade new spot and derivatives markets. On-chain, the protocol manages order book operations, trade execution, order matching, and settlement programmatically.
  • Insurance Module: Designed to support underwriters, this module facilitates the backing of derivatives markets hosted on the exchange.
  • Oracle Module: This crucial component acquires real-world price data, such as traditional stock market information, used to establish asset prices on the INJ exchange.
  • Peggy Module: Serving as a bridge, Peggy connects Injective Protocol to the Ethereum blockchain. This allows ERC-20 token holders to seamlessly convert their tokens into Cosmos-native coins.

The Injective ecosystem has garnered substantial support, featuring over 100 projects and attracting a community of more than 150,000 members worldwide. Notable investors include industry leaders like Binance, Pantera Capital, Jump Crypto, and Mark Cuban.

The native token of the Injective Protocol is denoted as "INJ." INJ holds multifaceted utility, facilitating protocol governance, capturing value within decentralized applications (dApps), enhancing Proof-of-Stake (PoS) security, incentivizing developers, and supporting staking activities.

The INJ token holds a pivotal role in governing every aspect of Injective, encompassing vital components like chain upgrades. Following the mainnet launch, the Injective community has actively engaged in governance, channeling all proposals through a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) governance vote. For an in-depth understanding, refer to the comprehensive governance page [here](insert link).

Maintaining the deflationary nature of INJ is a priority, with 60% of fees generated by decentralized applications (dApps) channeled into an on-chain buy-back-and-burn auction. Explore the burn auction page [here](insert link).

Beyond governance, INJ is integral to securing the Injective blockchain through a proof-of-stake mechanism. Validators and delegators alike can participate in staking activities, contributing to the network's overall security.

Furthermore, 40% of fees generated by users on dApps developed on Injective are directly allocated to incentivize new developers, fostering a continual influx of builders into the Injective ecosystem. This mechanism ensures a dynamic and growing community of developers contributing to the platform's expansion.

The Average Fees on The Injective Protocol Blockchain

With transaction expenses approximately at $0.0003 (as of January 2024), Injective currently stands as the most cost-effective choice among layer 1 networks.

The INJ Token Wallets

INJ (Injective Protocol's native token) is an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain. Therefore, users can use any wallet that supports ERC-20 tokens to store INJ. The popular options include Exodus, MetaMask, Trust Wallet, MyEtherWallet, Ledger, Trezor, Trust Wallet, Coinbase Wallet, Atomic Wallet, etc.
