What is the Tron network?

The Tron network is a blockchain-based platform designed to build decentralized applications (DApps) and execute smart contracts. It was founded by Justin Sun in 2017. Tron aims to create a decentralized internet by providing a scalable, high-throughput blockchain infrastructure that allows developers to create and deploy their own applications.

Justin Sun had previously worked as the Chief Representative for Ripple in China before venturing into the blockchain space with the creation of Tron. Sun's ambitious goal was to challenge established centralized platforms like YouTube and Netflix by providing a platform where content creators could directly interact with their audience without intermediaries taking a large portion of their revenue.

Tron's initial coin offering (ICO) took place from August 31 to September 2, 2017, during which the project raised approximately $70 million. This ICO provided the funding needed to develop the Tron blockchain platform.

Following the ICO, Tron underwent rapid development and growth. The project gained significant attention within the blockchain community, partly due to Justin Sun's aggressive marketing strategies and high-profile partnerships. Tron's mainnet, which is the independent blockchain network that hosts its native cryptocurrency TRX, was launched on May 31, 2018. This marked a significant milestone in the project's development, as it transitioned from being an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain to having its own native blockchain.

Tron uses a delegated proof-of-stake (DPoS) consensus mechanism, where a limited number of elected nodes validate transactions and produce blocks. This design is intended to improve scalability and transaction throughput compared to some other blockchain platforms.

Tron aims to address scalability issues commonly associated with blockchain networks by providing high throughput. Its architecture is designed to support a large number of transactions per second (TPS), making it suitable for applications with high transaction volumes.

The Tron Virtual Machine is a lightweight, Turing-complete virtual machine that enables developers to execute smart contracts on the Tron network. TVM is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing developers to easily port their Ethereum-based DApps to Tron.

Tron supports the development and deployment of decentralized applications (DApps) across various industries, including gaming, social media, finance, and entertainment. Some popular DApps built on Tron include decentralized exchanges (DEXs), gaming platforms, and decentralized finance (DeFi) applications.

Tron acquired BitTorrent, one of the largest peer-to-peer file sharing protocols, in 2018. The integration of BitTorrent into the Tron ecosystem aims to enhance decentralized file storage and content distribution, furthering Tron's vision of decentralizing the internet.

The TRON network hosts data freely, without a central authority. Content creators are rewarded with TRX tokens for their creative efforts. Additionally, TRON enables content creators to mint their own coins, usable within their developed applications. Moreover, TRON facilitates decentralized gaming on the network, allowing players to directly incentivize and reward creators with digital assets.

The ecosystem operates on three levels to ensure seamless and robust functionality:

  • Storage Layer: This layer securely stores network data, blockchain state, and historical data. Its primary purpose is to organize various types of ecosystem data efficiently.
  • Application Layer: Developers play a crucial role in this layer, utilizing TRX to develop applications and create wallets.
  • Core Layer: In this layer, various instructions are processed. They can be written in only two programming languages—Solidity and Java. The core layer computes instructions, processes them, and sends them to the Tron Virtual Machine, where logic is executed, and decentralized applications (dApps) run.

TRX is the native cryptocurrency of the Tron network, used for transaction fees, accessing network resources, and participating in governance through voting for Super Representatives. TRX is traded on various cryptocurrency exchanges and is an essential component of the Tron ecosystem.

TRON currently has a circulating supply of approximately 87.6 billion tokens out of a total supply of slightly over 100 billion tokens.

During its token sale in 2017, 15.75 billion TRX were allocated to private investors, with an additional 40 billion earmarked for participants in the initial coin offering (ICO). The Tron Foundation received 34 billion tokens, while a company owned by Justin Sun acquired 10 billion.

Where to buy Tron?

Users can buy Tron on numerous exchanges where it is listed, such as Poloniex, Bancor, KuCoin, Binance, Bitfinex, Coinbene, and many more.

The average fees on the Tron network

The average transaction fees on Tron are rather low, at around $0.13 for transacting the TRX tokens and around $1.62 for sending TRC-20 tokens.
